A little TLC keeps your matcha ritual looking good.
When you first get your whisk: Remove all outer packaging and plastic.
Before whisking: in a separate cup/bowl soften the bamboo bristles (tines) briefly in warm/boiling water for a minute - on the first use make sure the curls of the tines unravel.
Whisk gently: use a light zig-zag motion - don’t press or scrape against the bowl.
After use: rinse your whisk with warm water only-no soap, scrubbing or dishwasher.
Let it breathe: air-dry your whisk on on your whisk holder ideally, and never pack it away damp. You should have the central tines of the chasen in the small hole end of the naoshi, while the outer ones hug the curves of the outside (they are the perfect pair!).
When is it time to get a new whisk? Whenever it’s lost its shape irreversibly or the tines have broken :(
